Professor Gautereaux joins the 5-timers club. Longtime #VocalFam Kayla Gautereaux joined us for an awesome chat about how she is using the framework of the scientific method in the applied voice studio both for current voice teachers and for training voice teachers. This episode demonstrates Prof. G's wonderful mastery of conceptualizing new models that enhance voice teaching beyond the mentor/apprentice model in a framework that allows the singer to be the investigator and voice teacher to be the co-investigator of a study into the student's voice. A fantastic conversation!

Our dear friend Ken Bozeman returns for his 3rd feature episode. Ken has been touring the world discussing pedagogic concepts that have transformed his teaching. Dr. P and Prof. Pigott are so thankful for Ken's mentorship and friendship because many of these concepts also transformed their own teaching. Dr. P and Sarah address this week's controversial Ian Bostridge performance where he stopped mid song cycle to ask the audience to put down their phones and turn off the flash functions. It was a varied and weaving conversation with two sort of opposite perspectives. In the end, the take home point was, be courteous, consider others, and let's get audience members in seats. Join us.

Coming off of Dr. P's recent faculty search and interview process Sarah was curious to hear more about what the job search process is like in 2024. Dr. P shares some thoughts on the overall academic music job market (the bleak part), followed by some recommendations for those applying for positions, and finally some hopefulness about why you still might consider pursuing graduate degrees in voice.

One of our VocalFri philosophies has always been not getting caught up on what terminology we use, as long as we can define and describe how we are using those words. We discussed this on an older episode, but we've seen a lot of recent posts regarding terminology and it seemed like a good time to revisit this topic. An interesting, winding conversation.

#VocalFam we are back! Today's a special episode for a few reasons. First, we start with a pretty big announcement for the podcast.
Then, we are joined by esteemed guests Dr. Pasquale Bottalico, Dr. Joshuas Glasner, and Yvonne Redman to discuss their multiple studies investigating how room acoustics impact a singer's experience in a space. Any singer will tell you that they feel differently singing in various venues. This team is finally giving us data to support why that occurs. This is a conversation you MUST hear!

Whoa! This one got a little deep. Sarah, Liz, and Dr. P dive into some heavy discussions for a Friday morning. We all want to do our absolute best for our students, but is there a time you need to realize you are working harder than the student? We also took a strange trip into how we think the profession evaluates our success as voice teachers. Of course we have some recent pop culture news at the end. A true old school VocalFri!

Longtime #VocalFam Dr. Ian Howell of the Embodied Music Lab joins the pod for the first appearance in some time to tell us about his journey through a new (really old?) lens of voice acoustics. Both Dr. P and Dr. Howell come from a background of the traditional source-filter theory (solid state theory) of voice production, but for the past many months Ian has begun speaking publicly about a reframing of how the voice pedagogy community should consider approaching voice acoustics, through the transient theory of voice production. If you've encountered any of his posts surrounding transient theory, now is your chance to hear him discuss some of the ideas out loud.

Maybe you really can skip to the good part? Every time we talk about acoustics, we find our audience wants application before they understand theory or other information. And maybe, just maybe Dr. P figured out how to do that this semester in pedagogy with a new chart. We break it down and review She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

A unique episode if there ever was one! This week, Sarah and Dr. P discussed their reactions to the voice pedagogy students' "Breathing Philosophy Podcasts." A great opportunity to hear some of the ways our students think, react to lecture or reading material, and synthesize information. And also an opportunity to hear things they have not yet connected. The in class experiment was a great learning experience. After we discuss the students pods they are included at the end of the episode. Only their names have been muted to protect identity.

Also there are two great articles mentioned during the podcast. The links to the Rollings-Bigler/Osborne article and the Helding/Meyer article are both included. This is a MUST LISTEN for anyone teaching voice pedagogy!

If you are here for the hard hitting voice pedagogy news...COME BACK NEXT WEEK! Seriously, we have a huge episode that will drop on Friday. And for some strange reason Charlie's mic has an echo. And we are sorry. But sometimes you just do it for the kids.

Sarah and Dr. P are reminded that sometimes, being given an opportunity to try a new sound as a singer can take us out of ourselves and help us make more efficient noises. Which is sometimes uncomfortable at first. Happy Friday #VocalFam!

Dr. P and Sarah hash out the changes and evolution that Dr. P's ped classes have taken over the last 15 years. From re-creating opera singers 15 years ago, to now having fully incorporated contemporary styles into every class, this was so much fun to consider what it means to teach voice pedagogy in 2022.

Happy New Year! #VocalFam Ian Howell, Kayla Gautereaux, Chadley Ballentyne, and Joshua Glasner join Sarah and Dr. P for a VocalFri event: Teaching Online 2.0. Our Teaching Online episode is now sorely out of date, despite being only 10 months old, so the full Distributed Music Research Team is back for the first time since their Viral Video Voice Conferencing episode in April. In the wake of 2020 we reflect back on surprises from technological developments we've curated. We share some thoughts about Ian's "What Happens Next" essay, and we discuss our thoughts on what excites us about the possibilities for teaching, rehearsing, and performing online now and into the future. VocalFam, The Rebellion is reborn today and you will not be the last Jedi!
