Presidential Election Season is winding down! And while 2024 promises to be one for the history books, we decided to check out some other election years that are already in there. Today, we focus on the Election of 1960, to follow up our Election of 1892 episode. It's Vice President Nixon vs. Senator John F Kennedy in a razor thin result, far closer than most people realize. And highlights the integrity, at least in 1960, of one Richard M. Nixon, who conceded this exceptionally close race for the good of the country.
Join the Rebeccas as they dive in deep to this election with a whole list of "firsts" and one that has entirely too many similarities to the 2024 election!

It's Presidential Election Season! And while 2024 promises to be one for the history books, we decided to check out some other election years that are already in there. Today, we focus on the Election of 1892, a pivotal "rematch" election between the incumbent, Benjamin Harrison, and former President Grover Cleveland, who becomes the first, and so far only, President to win re-election after losing an intervening election.
Join the Rebeccas as they dive in deep to this election so long ago that seems to echo many of the issues we still are voting on today: there's a fight over immigration, the economy and tariffs, and a strong populist candidate makes a play to break the two-party system.

From 1934 to 1968, a rigid code of moralist conformity hung over every single movie produced in Hollywood during this time, stemming from a 1915 Supreme Court case that essentially held that the "new" form of media, motion pictures, was not "speech" and therefore was unprotected by the 1st Amendment. Movie studios scrambled to respond to a pushback against the wildness of the "Roaring '20s" and adopted The Hays Code "voluntarily" to make sure their movies could have the widest possible audience, and therefore make the most amount of money.
Join the Rebeccas as they dive into the interplay of Hollywood and American culture, and how that culture came to be dominated by one particular viewpoint about how society "should" be as determined by the Hays Code, and how the disparity between that and the reality of the counterculture that arose during the '50s and '60s, in addition to foreign competition from films without this code, would ultimately lead to its demise.
***PLEASE NOTE: Some of the audio for Becca is really poor, which, combined with several family hospital stays this summer, has lead to our longer-than-intended hiatus, and is part of the reason why this episode is so late. We tried to find time to redo, but just couldn't. However, the content of this pod is so important and relatively unknown, we decided to release "as is". We will be back soon with better audio quality AND ELECTION-THEMED EPISODES to help close out 2024!***

Apologies to all our faithful listeners! It's that time of year where tour guiding clashes with podcasting, but we are back on track and ready to rock out your summer with the intriguing twists of American history and culture.
Today's (a tiny bit late May) episode takes a deep dive into the quintessential American classic, Citizen Kane, brought to the big screen by the 24 year old wonder boy, Orson Wells. Join the Rebeccas as the help explain why this is often considered *the best* American film ever made, its connection to William Randolph Hearst, and why it takes a generation or two for the film to be fully appreciated by American audiences.

Tour Guide Tell All wants to help you observe the true meaning of our Memorial Day Weekend, honoring all those who have sacrificed for our country, by taking a deep dive into one of the most storied military units of all time (even though we aren't quite sure why...), Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.
Join the Rebeccas as they reveal the origins of these "Riders" who didn't actually get to ride much of anything, and the prominent connections between the war that made the Rough Riders famous and our own Arlington National Cemetery here in the DC area.

The election of 1948 is one of those few elections that really stand out for a number of reasons, but the most famous reason is the iconic picture of the re-elected President Truman holding up a newspaper proudly declaring "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN"

March is Women's History Month, and as we are fond of reminding everyone, women's history is American history, and there's no better way to focus attention on that than by talking about some of our favorite "forgotten women" of our Founding Era.

February is Black History Month; a time to pause a bit and reflect on how Black History is American History, and to highlight the often untold or hidden stories we don't know nearly enough about. This week, we dive into one of the most important, and most effective, protests of the Civil Rights Era: The Selma Marches.
Join the Rebeccas as they take a deep dive into not only how the marches occurred, but why they occurred, linking them the broader Civil Rights movement that had already scored a number of significant wins by 1965, and explaining in detail why these marches were so successful.

For fans of the Pod, you probably know that our esteem for President Andrew Jackson is hovering near our esteem for President Wilson....right around the bottom of the heap. But that isn't going to stop us from telling you the fascinating tale of the shockingly close attempt on Jackson's life, while also stating clearly and firmly: political violence of any kind is never acceptable. And yes, that includes folks we don't even like!
Join the Rebeccas as they dive into the life of the clearly mentally disturbed wannabe assassin, and give you the bizarre details of the attempt that makes one think Jackson might be one of the luckiest human beings ever.

Double Indemnity (1944) is, shall we say, "loosely based" on the real life murder of one Albert Snyder by his wife, Ruth, and her lover, Judd Gray. At the time the murder in 1927, this was labeled "The Crime of the Century" and was relentlessly pursued by the press which, shockingly, brought all sorts of twists and misrepresentations into the case.
Join the Rebeccas as they take a deeper dive into what actually happened with the case, how Hollywood and the press distort it, and how all this relates to the to the Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed in 1974.

OYEZ OYEZ OYEZ! It's October, which means the Supreme Court is back in session and the Rebeccas are digging into some of the history of the Court this month.
Associate Justice of the Supreme Court William O. Douglass is probably one of the most important Supreme Court Justices you probably know nothing about. Appointed by FDR, he remains the longest serving justice in the history of the court, at just over 36 years. Listen about his interesting life, his many controversies, and how he almost single-handedly saved the C&O Canal from turning into a parkway!

Most of us have at least heard of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania being one of the proximal causes of the United States entering WWI, but that isn't *entirely* true. As usual, there is more to the story!
Join the Rebeccas this week as they delve into the tragedy of this loss and learn how it differed in many ways from the other major maritime catastrophe of the era, the sinking of the Titanic.

The beginning of September marks the end of summer, and though we all enjoy that last 3-day weekend to get those summer plans checked off, it's important to remember the WHY of Labor Day.
Join the Rebeccas as they dive into one of the earliest organized labor strikes, all the more remarkable because it was driven by mostly formerly enslaved women who could largely neither read nor write, just as Jim Crew began to raise its ugly specter on the "New South."

Join the Rebecca's as we veer away from our DC roots and tackle an important event in modern cultural history, an event that would come to become known as "The Day the Music Died" after a tribute song by Don McLean hit the charts 12 years after the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson changed music history forever.

Join the Rebeccas before we start making July 4th plans to hear about what came after the Declaration of Independence; the Articles of Confederation. Most of us remember the important conversations held during the Constitutional Convention that would come a few years after the adoption of the Articles, but sometimes we aren't clear on why those questions came up in the first place, and the answer is our experience of government under the Articles.

Greetings and apologies to our amazing listeners. April showers brought us some May technical glitches as well as a very full tour schedule, but we are back and kicking off June in style as the Rebeccas take us back to our tour guide roots and describe their recent tour of the White House!
Listen to this episode to learn how you yourself can get to tour the East Wing of the White House, what you might see, and some pro tips along the way. But stick around also as the Rebeccas were also able to get a special (so not for the general public!) tour of the West Wing as well!

The famous Supreme Court decision delivered by Chief Justice Roger Taney was supposed to settle the "question of slavery" once and for all, but instead, it quickened the pace of the nation tearing itself apart. As we begin Black History Month, join the Rebeccas as they examine not only the impact of this exceptionally flawed legal decision, but also the human beings behind this pivotal case.

For this week's Minisode, we lost Canden but have Dan to explain the latest controversy swirling around the new addition to the Korean War Memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC. $22 million dollars to make an addition to add all the names of those lost in the war, making it more like the Vietnam Veterans' War Memorial nearby. What could be wrong with that? Lots!

We make as big a deal out of it (The Gold Rush) as we should, because it is a big deal. It’s not one of those things that’s like, ‘oh, it was bigger in pop culture than it really was!’. Nooo….The California Gold Rush is really foundational in understanding so much about, not only California, but specifically San Francisco, and just the whole migration westward, there’s a lot happening.”
We are taking our show on the road, hitting the Ponderosa, heading West. Not really, but we are talking about a western topic today: The Gold Rush!
Join the Rebeccas as we discuss the California Gold Rush and the opening of the West.

"(WWI) is a war that is under-studied in the United States. Somebody said this to me once, that we feel about World War II in the United States, the way that Europeans feel about World War I....World War I is the big trial, and World War II is kind of this thing that happened afterward. And to wit, we have a friend, Matilda...and she moved to a teeny tiny town in the middle of nowhere France for a little while and there's about 100 people that live there, and on Armistice Day...they all get together, and day drink, because France; and they read out the names of all the of the people from their village that died in the war."
We are dedicating a new memorial in DC, the National World War One Memorial, this week! We at Tour Guide Tell All are never ones to let a good opportunity go to waste, so the Rebeccas are here to chat about the memorial, and give an overview of American participation in the war. Join us as we discuss the basics of World War I, debunk some myths, and prepare to usher a new memorial to the Nation's capital.

"When it came to...rhetorical style, Flo was a down and dirty kinda type...Let’s say the uncomfortable thing, let’s get up into our uncomfortable space, because that’s where we can start to move past, and start getting the real work done. And I think she acted on that in every facet of her life."
March is Women's History Month and our team is diving deep into the lives and legacies of a few incredible women from American History. We continue our exploration of interesting women in history with Florynce Kennedy. Florynce "Flo" Kennedy was a pivotal member of the Women's Liberation and Civil Rights movements in the 20th century and used her work as an activist and advocate to build a better world for women of all backgrounds.

‘Everybody has heard the name, and I feel like there’s an overview where everyone has this shared collective experience of Pocahontas, and as you’re probably not going to be surprised to learn, almost none of that is true.’
March is Women’s History Month! We continue our stories about incredible women in American history by looking at one of our earliest celebrities: Pocahontas! More myth than fact at this point, the real woman behind the story played an important role in early America and the development of the relationship between native Americans and the settling Europeans.
Join The Rebeccas as they discuss, for the first time, another Rebecca. Why does Pocahontas take the Christian name of Rebecca? This and so many other questions are answered in our latest pod.

"It’s fascinating how much in a short, relatively short political career, she is so admired, she is so celebrated….she is called a genius, she is called a hero; the salvation of American politics! She was called the best politician of the century, but also she faced incredible criticism from all sides. Which is not surprising because she was a Black woman in politics."
Our Black History Month series continues with an exploration of the life and legacy of legendary Texas politician, Barbara Jordan. She busted every glass ceiling she encountered on her political journey and in a relatively short career, made incredible strides for women of color. Learn about the Fifth Ward in Houston, Texas political traditions, the Watergate impeachment hearings, hidden disease, a secret love, and more.
