Hi friends, this is a special episode dedicated to sharing a powerful somatic tool and practice with you: centering.
Centering was created by the founder of The Strozzi Institute, Richard Strozzi-Heckler Phd who brings together 5 decades of studies in eastern and western medicine and healing to his work. Centering is a somatic practice to be present, open, connected to what matters most - it begs us to awaken from the trance of life and access our embodied imagination and build capacity and welcome whatever arises.

Introduction, attribution and lineage: 0:00:-5:46:
Centering practice: 5:46-16:36
16:37: debriefing and application of this practice
Length: our length, from toes to head and up the spine, represents our dignity. Our dignity is not something we have to earn or effort for, it's something we are born with.
Width: our width from the edges of our bodies, from left food to right foot, represents our belonging. Centering in our width also invites us to consider our collective belonging.
Depth: The third dimension we center in is our depth, or our safety. Our depth is found in the belly, the pelvic region and sacrum. Feel into and even visualize all the systems in place within your body that keep you safe.
Back body: your back body, found in your shoulder blades, sacrum, heels represents your history, and all of those who have shaped, loved, informed your journey. Your back body also holds the former versions of yourself and you can presence everyone you love behind you.
Front body: your front body represents your present and all that you long to move towards.
Throughout this centering practice, notice the sensations, emotions, thoughts, images, memories or thoughts that arise through you.
Leading from center opens a doorway to the realms of intuition, perception and expression.
As you get experience being led through the center, ask yourself what is possible if you are able to return to your dignity line, belonging and safety throughout the day? How would your actions and experiences shift?
If you are a leader, business owner, entrepreneur looking to deepen your leadership capacity, step into embodied leadership for the sake of what is most important to you - schedule time with me at www.elisamaryhaggarty.com

Today’s episode is the fourth in a five part series on relationships and we sit down with Somatic Coach and Practitioner, Sarah Coxon. Sarah connects the dots between her first love, archeology and the work she does now to help people reclaim their power through somatic practices. Our conversation traverses many spaces, and brings us all closer to understanding, and feeling empowered about the healing path. Unlike many practitioners, Sarah doesn’t hyperfocus on the trauma, instead, she uses practices and present moment awareness to address what is here now. Sarah offers us gem after gem and posits that perhaps moving toward joy and aliveness can be a powerful pathway to healing.

Today’s episode is the second in a five part series on relationships. Our guest and thought partner in this conversation is Kristen Lisanti who coaches and trains transformational leaders. After 20 years of cultivating healthy, high-performing cultures in organizations around the world, she now builds the capabilities of her clients to do the same. Kristen hosts Radiant Leader, a community of practice for transformational leaders, and immersive leadership development retreats and programs, including her mindful leadership cohort, Momentum. She lives outside New York City.
This is one of my favorite conversations on the podcast yet - and it’s an exploration of the human experience and the beauty of how our work can be fuel for our growth - and that in seeing work and career evolution as a pathway towards personal ascension and radical acceptance, we are never not in learning mode. Kristen walks us through her new framework for the 3 traps that keep leaders stuck in transitional leadership and how we use attunement and self-awareness to avoid these traps and step into the dynamic conversation of transformational leadership.

A solo episode with Elisa who shares her insights and own unlearning about running a podcast.
You'll hear a review of top quotes from guests and also a preview of what is to come with a new series on Relationships coming soon.
“I am unlearning that I always know in the moment what is good or bad. The present is always changing our stories about the past. We have the ability to change the past because we have a different relationship with it, based on our present day." Connor Carrick, Episode 1
“Unlearning is the ultimate act of humility for me. It is the surrender to the fact that everything and everyone is a teacher, and everyone and everything is a student.” Claude Silver, Episode 15
"What I feel when I hear the word unlearning, I feel a relief, a softening, a permission. And, what I think about it is that if we have some intact culture and some experience at all with elder-hood, and what it may be to be near someone who are true elders, or many people or who are true elders, there wouldn’t be so much we have to unlearn, we could trust the learning that we did." Kimberly Ann Johnson, Episode 22
"Unlearning in degrees matters." Kate Fagan
And, Elisa previews an upcoming episode with Jordan Dann which will be released on June 13th.

This episode is for anyone who is feeling a sense of unrest or dissatisfaction with their life and who wants to find more joy and meaning. Amy helps us break down why we desire what we desire, what actually drives us to pursue our goals and what key questions we can ask along the way to make sure we are living on purpose. A favorite part about our today was the nuance that Amy’s work brings to self help and self development. That our greatest learnings and times of growth come when we contract and rumble with hard things - and how we can use that data to better direct our next steps. Amy helps us understand why “should” is a word that potentially carries a lot of heavy energy, riddled with guilt and tension. This episode is HIGH energy, riddled with insights and really really human.

Today I sit down with behavioral economist, professor and author, Linda Babcock to discuss the power of saying no for women at work.
This podcast interview is for any woman in the workplace who feels stretched thin, frustrated by a lack of advancement in their career and afraid to say no. If you are an organizational leader, this podcast will help you understand how to strategically use your greatest resource by shifting how you allocate and reward non-promotical tasks.
We discuss what an NPT or non-promotable task is, and why women are 50% more likely to volunteer for work that doesn’t advance their career. Linda and her co-authors propose tactical and strategic ways we can empower women in all positions to advocate for their needs by doing an inventory of how they spend their time, understanding the currency their company thrives on and embracing strategies to make sure they spend their time doing work that aligns with their skills and also helps advance their role in the workplace.
Linda’s work is focused on understanding barriers to women’s advancement in the workplace and developing evidence-based interventions to promote a level playing field. She is the founder and director of the Program for Research and Outreach on Gender Equity in Society (PROGRESS), which pursues positive social change for women and girls through education, partnerships, and research.
Linda is the James M. Walton Professor in Economics at Carnegie Mellon University and the author of Ask for It: How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation to Get What They Really Want and Women Don’t Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide.
“The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women’s Dead End Work” is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and wherever books are sold. To learn more, visit https://www.thenoclub.com

About Donna:
Donna Jackson Nakazawa is an award-winning science journalist, author of seven books, and an internationally-recognized speaker whose work explores the intersection of neuroscience, immunology, and human emotion. Her mission is to explore the science of the mind-body connection and harness it for healing. Her upcoming book, Girls on the Brink: Helping Our Daughters Thrive in an Era of Increased Anxiety, Depression, and Social Media (Random House/Harmony 2022) is available for pre-order now and will be available wherever books are sold this summer). In this book, Donna explores today’s growing adolescent female mental health crisis. Anyone on the front lines of caring for girls today—parents, educators, counselors—knows that girls are more prone to depression and anxiety than ever before. Now we have the science to understand why. Drawing on insights from both the latest science and interviews with girls, Donna guides readers through 15 “antidote” strategies to help teenage girls flourish even in the face of stress, creating a new playbook for how we—parents, families, and the human tribe—can ensure a healthy emotional inner life for all of our girls.

In this episode, we cover how Kat came about the work of researching human connection, what she is actively unlearning and how we can more intentionally build communities and friendships that help us move through life. In this episode for The School of Unlearning, I sit down with the author, founder and CEO of Askinosie chocolate.
I first came across Askinosie chocolate via Shawn's book, “Meaningful Work”. I read this book and fell in love with his spiritual and thorough approach to finding a vocation and meaning in our personal lives. I immediately searched for the nearest store that sold Askinosie chocolate and bought a bar. I’ve been hooked ever since.
This episode is deeply personal, a conversation between two people navigating grief, joy, loss, meaning and yes, chocolate. Shawn urges us to look to what breaks our heart in order to find meaning in our lives and in our work.
In this episode you'll hear:
"Maybe if we combine our sorrow? Maybe that's joy?" Ross Gay
Check out Shawn’s TED Talk here.

On today’s 5 Minute Friday podcast, I dive into the world of boundaries. What they are, why we struggle to create them and how to start embracing the power of no, for your sake and for those around you.
On this podcast you will learn:
"Sexually, professionally, personally, saying no takes balls. Little noes prepare us for the big noes that define the major movements of our lives. The job we shouldn't take, the relationship we must leave, the deal that seems shady. No, finally, to another drink, no to abuse, no to getting back together again. No to extreme lifesaving measures.
When we were children, no came easily to the lips. Wear a coat? Turning off the TV? Leaving your sister alone? No chance. But then we became civilized. We aged into self consciousness. Saying no started to feel rude or insubordinate, mean or lazy, withholding or dangerous. There's hardly a positive intention associated with no. Except self-preservation."

In today's 5 Minute Friday solo-pod, I share the origin and reasoning behind my mantra, "you can't skip steps".
I think a lot of process in building a company, in starting a podcast too, and my work in health tech start ups. Everyone wants to be somewhere they aren’t. We assume bigger is better, more is definitely better and it all should have happened yesterday.
Not skipping steps seems tedious, but could there be a more thorough and simple business plan, could there be a more thorough and simple spiritual roadmap?

In this solo-pod, I propose that we give workplace grief a seat at the table. Our identities and much of our sense of self comes from the hours and the energy we pour into our jobs and our careers and yet we barely talk about professional grief. I believe the more we normalize talking and moving through grief in our lives, but specifically in the workplace, the closer we will get to humanizing each other and improving our team chemistry and culture.

Those triumphs came out of Andrea’s own tragedy when her young husband was diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor while she was pregnant with their only child.

This episode is raw, it’s real, and it’s brimming with insight and vulnerability. Here we go.

I was first drawn to Andrea’s work over a decade ago when I was studying to become a health coach. Little did I know the course I was about to sign up for, Digestive Intensive would change the way I viewed healthcare, problem solving and begin a friendship that would see me through my own personal and professional celebrations and challenges. This episode is raw, it’s real, and it’s brimming with insight and vulnerability. Here we go.
In this episode we cover:

Elisa Haggarty is a Conscious Leadership Coach and host of The School of Unlearning Podcast. Elisa has been a coach for over 18 years- from college basketball to nutrition to more recently helping leaders bring more consciousness and play into their personal and work lives. Her work is influenced by a philosophy and belief that, "life happens for you" which has been a through line for Elisa her entire life. Believing life happens for you begs the question, "how can I learn and grow from whatever is happening?". She has sought to find and create meaning from every chapter of her life and empowers her clients and teams to do the same. From her first heartbreak, first job loss, divorce and enduring the grief that comes with slowly losing her Dad to a rare form of Dementia, Elisa's rich life experience and humble curiosity is what allows others to connect with her, and ultimately themselves in a deeper way. She finds joy in making her friends homemade chocolate and can most often be found hiking or spending time in nature and has two adorable cats, Josie and Lou.

In this 5 Minute Friday, I argue that questions are more powerful than mantras. I discuss how questions remove us from the island, or illusion, of knowing and help blow up our narrow perspective on how we want things to be.
In this 5 Minute Friday, you will learn:
My favorite quote on living the questions by poet and author, Rainer Maria Rilke:
"Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

Quitting comes with a lot of shame and fear. We are all told from a young age, that quitting is weakness and is a recipe to let yourself and others down. In this 5 Minute Friday, I challenge that notion by sharing my relationship to quitting from a young age through sports and how more recently, I am actively unlearning the meaning and value of stepping away from relationships and pursuits that my body says no to.

For episode 3 on The School of Unlearning podcast, I sit down with my friend and creative entrepreneur, Lindsey Murphy. Lindsey is the Founder and creator of "The Fab Lab", a TedX speaker, soon to be author and force of nature! Lindsey brings us along her journey of unlearning cultural conditioning with humility and candor. In this powerful episode, you will be challenged and called to embrace unlearning, which Lindsey believes is our birthright and obligation.
“Unlearning absolutely is healing, period. But also, what unlearning is for this generation…If you are hearing my voice, watching this right now, you are called to unlearn now. It is what we are here to do. It’s why we exist, they did all of that so you could be here and do this work freely…and you not doing this work is you choosing more injustice, more unbalance, more devastation, more of what we all claim we don’t want. You must choose your unlearning.” Lindsey Murphy

In the first ever episode for The School of Unlearning podcast, I sit down with my friend and NHL Defenseman, Connor Carrick. We traverse childhood, pro sports in the NHL and Connor reveals what he believes to be the secret weapon for the next generation of athletes.
This episode is special to me as it bridges the gap between sports and spirituality, a less talked about gift that comes with playing team sports. Connor nudges us to curb our ego, shares his tips on how to settle into the present moment and stop pretending to be someone we really aren't. After 9 seasons in the NHL, Connor finally "lets his shoulders drop", a reminder he uses on the ice to help him tap into flow state so that he can play his best hockey. I have a sneaky feeling that whether you play pro sports or not, this episode will empower you to redefine success and find agency in your life.

Elisa Haggarty is a Conscious Leadership Coach and the host of The School of Unlearning.
Hello humans! My name is Elisa Haggarty, I’m a Conscious Leadership Coach and the host of The School of Unlearning podcast.
I’ve realized that we spend the first half of life being told what to learn, how to be, and what life should look like, and the second half of life, rethinking and unlearning most of it. On the SOUL podcast, we will take a no holds barred look into uncovering myths and constructs around gender norms, sexuality, career success, financial security, trauma, and more. These conversations are forged with curiosity, reflection, and most of all, uncensored real talk - because unlearning begins with speaking our truth.
The process of becoming more of who we really are, is a coming home. And as cozy as that sounds, it's also an unraveling of sorts--- of our identity, our belief system, our behaviors and even, our communities. Let's face it, unlearning can be glorious, exhilarating, sticky, and also... straight up terrifying.
In my experience, things like unlearning are less terrifying when we do them together. These are the stories of the most curious and successful people I know, what beliefs they carry with them today and the ones they struggle to unlearn. Come ready to reflect on your core learnings and rethink social constructs so that you shed the life that the world told you to live, and begin living the one meant for you.
Welcome to the School of Unlearning

In my experience, things like unlearning are less terrifying when we do them together. These are the stories of the most curious and successful people I know, what beliefs they carry with them today and the ones they struggle to unlearn. Come ready to reflect on your core learnings and rethink social constructs so that you shed the life that the world told you to live, and begin living the one meant for you.

She has sought to find and create meaning from every chapter of her life and empowers your clients and teams to do the same.
