This week we talk about how to judge righteously, the light of Christ and I interview a very brave lady: my friend Brianne! She tells us some things she's pondered as she read Moroni 8 and about the miracles she's witnessed in her son's life.

This week Moroni teaches us about various priesthood ordinances. I talk about Gratitude, and how I've been thinking about the Greatness and Goodness of God (specifically the talk, "The Greatness and Goodness of God by Dale G. Renlund from the April 2020 General Conference) and how that popped up in the reading assignment this week.
Also, I announce the upcoming retirement (or hiatus???) of The Savior Said.

This week we get to talk about one of my FAVORITE stories of the Book of Mormon- Moroni's "weakness in writing". I love what it teaches us about approaching the Lord with humility in our weakness and how He can make weak things become strong. I talk about the importance of faith and hope, and what I learned about hope and my family this week.

Do you hear that? It's the sound of waves crashing, wind blowing....and mixtapes playing! That's right, it's a mixtape episode! Since we're traveling with the Jaredites to the promised land, I thought it was appropriate that we listen to some inspirational tunes about water.
Songs featured in this mixtape:
Into The Sea (It's Gonna Be Ok) by Tasha Layton Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) Lyric Video by Hillsong UNITED Wade in the Water by The Petersens Master the Tempest Is Raging by Ruben Alves Walking on Water by NEEDTOBREATHE

We've made it to the book of Ether! Why do we not call the Brother of Jared by his actual name? How does the Lord show compassion towards us (like He did to the Brother of Jared)? How did the Brother of Jared make the stones? Why did the Lord say "never before have I shown myself"? All this and more on this week's episode.

This week I really wondered about Mormon and Moroni's mental health. I mean, I've been wondering about it for awhile, but this week I really started looking at the way trauma impacted Moroni's writing style. We talk about why Moroni is one of my favorite scriptural writers, why bad things happen to good people, and why gold plates aren't a weird writing material in the ancient world. This episode is kind of research paper-y so if you want to see the quotes etc for yourself, you can find them in my blog at http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/2020/10/s2-e42-nov-2-8-i-speak-unto-you-as-if.html

As I've read the assigned reading this week, I keep thinking "Poor Mormon!" What did he see? What did his son see? The wickedness of the people he lived among had to be mindboggling. Yet through it all he loved them and loved the Lord. In this episode I try to find ways we can do that in our own lives.

This week it’s a faceoff between Matthew 5 and 3 Nephi 12! Well, not really. But we can learn some things by examining the differences between the various sermons and the versions of the Lord’s Prayer. Also, we learn that perfection is pending!

Fires, tornadoes, and floods...OH MY! This week the Nephites experience the calamities that occurred on the Earth after Christ was crucified. After going through some of my own struggles, I realized that the destruction could be a good metaphor for some of the stuff we face in this life. And that made me think of ART! Specifically one of my favorite sculptors, Auguste Rodin and one of my favorite painters, Robyn from Art By Geek Girl! Rodin was unavailable (he died in 1917), but Robyn was willing to be an interviewee for this week's episode. We talk about the contrast between light and dark in art and in life and how Christ truly is the Light of the World.
You can find Robyn's artwork at https://www.artbygeekgirl.com/ , https://www.facebook.com/Artbygeekgirl/, or https://www.instagram.com/geekgirlph/
Also the painting she talks about in this episode (I Know That My Redeemer Lives) is the cover art for this episode!

This is a super mini episode. This week was nuts, the kids returned (virtually) to school, and then...I got a migraine. So please give me a little grace this week, this episode is basically a short little testimony about the Savior.
Also migraines apparently take my ability to use punctuation, so this episode is a 5 minute run-on sentence. Sorry about that. Again, grace. Lots and lots of grace please!

It’s Christmas time! In August! Well, I guess it’s not *really* Christmas time, that won’t happen for another 5 years. At least that’s what Samuel the Lamanite tells us. We talk about that, how I LOVE the way that Samuel teaches about repentance, and why having a specifically 5 year (and a 400 year) prophecy is interesting.

What kind of Prophet was Nephi? How does understanding Nephi's teachings as a Prophet help us appreciate our current Prophet, President Nelson? And is ponderizing even a word??? I got quote-y in this episode! I loved the scripture assignment from this week because I saw how much Helaman's society is reflected in our own modern day society. I thought it would be interesting to pair some modern day scripture (quotes from General Authorities) with some of the ancient scripture from this week's reading. Enjoy! You can find all of the quotes I use at thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com

This week we dive into the "War Chapters" of the Book of Mormon. I wanted to do a scholarly reading and go into the different characters, the battles, the tactics, the strategies...but life had other plans. This has been a difficult week anxiety-wise as I start to look at going back to school in the middle of a pandemic hotspot. It has made focusing and really "studying" my scriptures difficult. However I found that "feasting on the words of Christ" sometimes means not studying the culture, the word usage, and all the other scholarly information on the text we're reading, but instead it means taking the scriptures that mean something to you and etching them on your heart. Clinging to them in the middle of the war you're fighting. Using them as your umbrella in the storm. So that's what I did this week. I learned several lessons from Captain Moroni, but I distilled the concepts I'm focusing on into 3 P's. I will be: Prayerful, Peaceful, and Prepared just like Captain Moroni.

This week I had a TON of stuff going on in my life and I didn’t have time to record an episode... YIKES! However, because Alma is talking to his son Corianton about sexual purity, I thought it might be a good time to revisit the law of chastity like we did last year when we were in 1 Corinthians. I went back and listened to the episode from Season 1 and honestly, I think it’s better than anything I could put together now! So this is a re-release of episode 33 from Season 1.
LISTENER ADVISORY: This episode is geared towards adults trying to help youth stay sexually pure. As a result, some content may not be appropriate to listen to in a family setting.
Description of Episode from Season 1: Because Paul talks about sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians, I decided it was time to talk a little bit about chastity. I'm talking from my experience of working with thousands of teens in my profession, as a mother of a teenage boy, and just as someone who cares about kids. I talk about the stuff I think we need to be addressing with our kids besides "don't have sex until you're married". Things like consent, sex and technology, using respectful language, and sexual harassment.
These are my own personal opinions and not meant to be any sort of official anything. Just some thoughts I had that I thought others might find helpful.

This week’s assignment felt like a warm honey gold summer afternoon! I loved it and I hope you love it too. We discuss conversion, chiasmus (pronounced Key Az Mus), and how Shiblon suffered from middle child syndrome.
Also, I ask YOU the question: As you read Alma 37:6–7, ponder and record ways you’ve seen this principle at work in your life. What are some small and simple things the Lord uses to bless you and accomplish His work?
If you want to send your answer in either as a recording (check your phone for a voice recorder app) or written format, just email it to thesaviorsaid@gmail.com or comment/message my Facebook or Instagram page. Your answers may be used in an upcoming episode of The Savior Said!

Speed warning! I was so excited about the stories this week (Ammon! Abish!) and I had SO MUCH I wanted to tell you, that I kind of become a motor mouth in this episode. If you need it to slow down, adjust the speed on your podcast player. Sorry! As I mentioned, we get to talk about Ammon and Abish this week! Two of my FAVORITE BofM characters EVER!!! We talk about the different ways that Ammon and Abish found to serve the Lord, how He was able to use them as instruments in His hand, and lessons we can apply to our own lives. Also, Ammon looks like Mattew McConaughey 😂😂😂

Waterworks ahead! Sorry guys, I pretty much cry my way through this episode. The burning of the women and children in Ammonihah just destroyed me this week! We talk about that, what we can learn about Alma's partnership with Amulek, and how we can heal through Christ. The song featured in this episode is One Day by Cochran & Co.

"God's work will not fail." With that simple statement, our Come Follow Me manual lays out the elemental truth of this week's lesson. Alma will encounter several who try to destroy his efforts, but we see how the Lord helps him and even gives him the tools he needs to succeed. The song featured in this episode is "You Already Know" by J.J. Heller.

What do Lady Gaga, Alexander Hamilton, and King Mosiah all have in common? They are all quoted on this episode of The Savior Said! In case you haven't heard by now, I skipped this week's episode because I was struggling amidst some negative feedback I'd received recently. And a big THANK YOU to all those who rallied around me. I love you!
But I couldn't just skip this week's assignment because one verse from this week wouldn't let me go! So I had to do a mini-episode to get it out of my system. This week I was fixated on Mosiah 21:33 where it says, “And it came to pass that king Limhi and many of his people were desirous to be baptized; but there was none in the land that had authority from God. And Ammon declined doing this thing, considering himself an unworthy servant.”
How was he unworthy??? That thought led me on so many rabbit trails. From how the Book of Mormon is translated (and how our culture impacts our reading) to what does unworthy really mean (maybe he just didn't have the Priesthood?) to how we sometimes let self doubt talk us into feeling "unworthy" when we really ARE worthy.
And yes, that IS Thor's hammer on the episode cover. My fellow comic book nerds will get why Mjolnir is on the cover of an episode about worthiness 😂
Technical note: I noticed in this recording I was talking REALLY fast. So I used some technology to slooooow it down. Hopefully that helps!

King Benjamin had a problem. How do I spread my words to all of my people? Even the ones far away, the ones that can't hear me? Luckily, the Lord inspired King Benjamin to find solutions to his problem. Just like the Lord has inspired prophets of all ages! Guys. I'm struggling so hard to find peace right now. With the news media screaming at me to panic, with toilet paper shortages every where I go, with scholarly articles and data championing social distancing...I just feel kind of distant from everything, including my Savior. I thought maybe some of you might be feeling the same way and might need a mixtape about finding peace in our Savior too! So here it is, my "PEACE: An Easter mixtape", my early Easter gift to you.

I was so inspired by Enos this week! His prayer and the concept of "sacred groves" really got me thinking and it dovetails into the personal preparation I'm doing for the 2020 April General Conference. I'll share some of my thoughts, but you're also going to hear some amazing messages by Angie Killian the author of the song My Own Sacred Grove. I'll share her song as well- please pay attention to the gorgeous message that we can receive revelation and find our own relationship with our Heavenly Father no matter where we are. A special thank you to Angie for sharing her words and talent with the world. You can learn more about Angie and her songs at https://www.angiekillian.com/ or find her on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Have you ever been swimming in the ocean and you get that feeling of being tossed around in the waves? Like you come up for air and then another wave pulls you under? That's how I felt reading this week's assignment! For me, there were little pockets of understanding amidst large amounts of undecipherable paragraphs. The little pockets were so beautiful though, including one of my fav chapters of the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 25.

You're invited to a Sunday night dinner at my Mom and Dad's house! We're discussing the Book of Revelation and the signs of the Savior's 2nd Coming. Some of this is fact and you'll get references, some of it is inferences and educated guesses. Take it as you will Make sure you know that it doesn't not replace your own study of the Book of Revelation- it just supplements it!

Well, we're here. In the Book of Revelation. It's been silently waiting for me all year and I'm super intimidated by it! This episode is kind of an intro to the Book of Revelation. I talk about symbolism, some tips for understanding the Book of Revelation, personal revelation, and how it all leads us back to Christ.

Who wrote the epistles of John? What is so unique about the epistle of Jude? If you could use two words to describe God, what would they be? Has any man seen God? We discuss all these questions and more in this week's episode.

Peter faced an impossible task: He knew the early Christian church was about to come under intense persecution and he knew he wouldn't be there to lead them through it. What wisdom could he impart? The answer is 1 and 2 Peter! This week I talk (a little) about the history of 1 & 2 Peter, how the gospel is preached to the dead (from 1 Peter 3:18–20; 4:6 and Doctrine and Covenants 138), and I interview Hayley to learn more about trials and joy! A big THANK YOU to Hayley for her interview!
In the interview with Hayley I mention two conference talks. One is about The Immediate Goodness of God By Elder Kyle S. McKay from the April 2019 General Conference, and the other I was a bit more fuzzy on. I said there was a quote in it with something about "what are you willing to give up in this life for the next life". The actual quote is: "Do we have the faith “not [to] be healed” from our earthly afflictions so we might be healed eternally?" from Has The Days of Miracles Ceased by Elder Donald L. Hallstrom.

What is that one scripture that just shakes your world? This week in the book of James, we find a scripture that shook a 14 year old boy's world and, as a consequence, the rest of the world forever more with the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the earth. In this episode I talk about a scripture I found in James that I thought applied to me. What will you find? We also talk about who was James, a time where I had to endure with patience, faith in Jesus Christ, and one of my bffs from the Old Testament, Rahab.

Sorry guys, this episode is a little heavier than normal. I'm just struggling right now, but this week's reading assignment really helped me and I hope it helps you too. Especially Jeffrey R. Holland's talk "An High Priest of Good Things To Come", which is my favorite conference talk EVER. Ever. For real. We talk about that, about drawing near to the Lord in faith, the Melchizedek Priesthood, The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), and you get to hear the song "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)" by Hillsong United.

In this episode (brought to you by the power of friendship!) my friend Kansas takes over The Savior Said for the week. My schedule was a little crazy this past week and I knew I didn't have time or mental energy to get everything AND the podcast done. So I thought, "Hey, why don't I ask Kansas to sub in for me?" Little did I know, I was playing right along with Heavenly Father's plan the whole time! Find out why it was so important for Kansas to immerse herself in the scriptures this week, the balance between Grace and works, the sacrifices we make for Christ, and finding joy in every circumstance. Again, a big THANK YOU to Kansas for sharing her time and experiences with us this week!

Rabbit trails. So many rabbit trails this week. First we Sister Frizzle is up with Galatians- who were they? Why was Paul writing to them? Then the first rabbit trail hits: I get interested in Galatians 4:13 and Paul's eyes. When I get back on track, we start with CFM and the first section has us scripturally spelunking through the footnotes of Galatians 5:1 (what is Freedom in Christ???) We also talk about the Abrahamic Covenant, Fruit of the Spirit, and Law of the Harvest.

This is a talk I gave in the Monte Sano Ward on September 8, 2019. Content is copyrighted.
"Brothers and Sisters, this morning I want to talk to you about the Grace of Jesus Christ.
Now, I only have 5 minutes to do this in and Grace is a subject that I could talk about for hours. So today I would like to focus on one of the aspects of Grace: enabling power, the strength and assistance, that we receive to do good works and overcome obstacles we otherwise would not be able to do on our own. In other words, I want to talk about how Grace applies when we start to think, “I can’t do it.” “I’ll never be good enough.” “Life is too hard.”
To do this, I would like to make an analogy. Years ago, my son decided he wanted to train to be an American Ninja Warrior. For those of you who don’t know, America Ninja Warrior is a TV show where the contestants battle through an obstacle course that requires great athletic skill and ability. There’s a gym in town that does offer Ninja Warrior training to kids so we signed up. He was doing well until he found an obstacle that was difficult to overcome. It’s called a Warped Wall and the goal is to run as fast as you can at a curved wall, to the point you run up the wall a little ways and then jump to reach the ledge at the top of the wall where you pull yourself up and over. My son found that as he tried this obstacle, over and over again, he would run as hard as he could, get to the part where he needed to jump, and then splat face first into the wall and slide back down. This happened again and again, for weeks.
How does this apply to us in a spiritual sense? I think we all have those specific weaknesses that we constantly find ourselves doing our best to overcome and yet splat into a wall time after time again.
Dieter F. Uchtdorf in his talk The Gift of Grace talks about the spiritual side of this when he says, “Though we all have weaknesses, we can overcome them. Indeed it is by the grace of God that, if we humble ourselves and have faith, weak things can become strong.23
Throughout our lives, God’s grace bestows temporal blessings and spiritual gifts that magnify our abilities and enrich our lives. His grace refines us. His grace helps us become our best selves.” In short, we are not only SAVED by Grace, we are CHANGED by Grace.
Weak things become strong. You see, while my son had been splatting over and over again he had also been inching up the wall. His muscles had been developing, his dexterity and agility improving. There is a purpose in our mistakes and our need to rely on the goodness of our Savior’s Atonement and Grace. Elder Bruce C. Hafen has written, “The great Mediator asks for our repentance not because we must ‘repay’ him in exchange for his paying our debt to justice, but because repentance initiates a developmental process that, with the Savior’s help, leads us along the path to a saintly character”
And this is where Grace enters into our analogy. After a few weeks of splatting unsuccessfully against the wall, my son’s Coach came to me and said, “You know, it might help if he wore different shoes- shoes with more grip on the bottom”. So at the next training session, he had the shoes. And it made a huge difference! He was able to get up much higher on the wall than he had before!
This is like the Savior’s Grace that gives us strength and assistance that we receive to do good works we otherwise would not be able to do.
Brad Wilcox, in his talk His Grace is Sufficient, has said, “The Savior’s gift of grace to us is not necessarily limited in time to ‘after’ all we can do. We may receive his grace before, during and after the time when we expend our own efforts”. Grace is not a booster engine that kicks in once our fuel supply is exhausted. Rather, it is our constant energy source. It is not the light at the end of the tunnel but the light that moves us through the tunnel. Grace is not achieved somewhere down the road. It is received right here and right now. It is not a finishing touch; it is the Finisher’s touch.”
But HOW do we access Grace like this? This enabling power? Gene R. Cook’s conference talk entitled “Receiving Divine Assistance Through the Grace of the Lord” is a wonderful guide to accessing Grace. He says, “To obtain grace, one does not have to be perfect but he does have to be trying... Then the Lord may allow him to receive that power. Moroni sums up the doctrine of grace succinctly: “If ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you…
(Moro. 10:32–33.)“
Back at the training gym, while the shoes made a BIG difference, my son was still splatting against the wall. Just splatting higher up and closer to his goal now. Finally the Coach climbed up to the top ledge and laid down across the top and extended his arms down to my son. My son ran up the wall, jumped and reached for the top while the coach grabbed his hands and lifted him up to the top of the wall. He made it with the help of his coach!
Because my son had a Coach who had personally conquered this obstacle and knew how it worked he was able to guide him over it. However the Coach also saw the value in building strength and dexterity through failure, the strength and ability my son gained through all those splats. Then after my son had tried his hardest and expended his own best efforts, the Coach was able to help lift him up to overcome that obstacle.
We have a Savior who has conquered the obstacles of this life, who knows the value in the struggles we face, and who gives us His Grace that enables us to climb and then finally overcome our weaknesses. Do not be discouraged if it feels like you are constantly splatting and not getting any nearer to the top of your obstacle. Russell M. Nelson has said, “We need not be dismayed if our earnest efforts toward perfection now seem so arduous and endless. Perfection is pending. It can come in full only after the Resurrection and only through the Lord.”
We have a Savior who loves us perfectly and gives us the miraculous gift of His Grace to not only overcome the obstacles in our life, but also to one day return us back to our Father in Heaven."

Y'all...this week I kind of go off on a rant about Grace and how important it is to understand the Grace of Jesus Christ. Also what American Ninja Warrior training taught me about Grace. We also talk about what Paul looked like and how important it is to teach our kids how to give.

This week's episode is kind of different. I was reading 2 Corinthians 4, and I started thinking of you guys- my listeners. I started thinking about all the trials YOU are going through. I started wondering what I could do to make your burdens lighter. The only thing that came to mind was to make you a mixtape. I used Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 4, words from our modern day Apostles and General Authorities, and some of my favorite inspiring and uplifting songs. It's not going to help anyone prep for Sunday School or Come Follow Me lessons, but I hope it lifts you up...and maybe makes your burdens just a bit lighter.

This is Part 2 of Episode 33. Because Paul talks about sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians, I decided it was time to talk a little bit about chastity.

This week we visit Corinth and explore Paul's epistle to the Corinthians. There were several different themes Paul talked about in this epistle: unity, following the word of God, and chastity. Because of this, I've divided this episode up into two parts. There's Part 1 (this episode!) that talks about unity and following the word of God. Part 2 will be a special episode designed for Parents and Leaders of Youth- and anyone else who wants to listen along- that talks about chastity.

This week we talk about the natural man vs the righteousness of God. Like Elder Shayne M. Bowen's article that CFM references in this week's assignment, each of us has two wolves inside of us. The good wolf and the bad wolf. Which one do we feed? I talk about two of my "bad wolves" that I discovered this week and some of the ways this week's scripture assignment helped me overcome them.

CONTENT WARNING: Heads up parents! In this episode I talk about a ministry called Scarlet Hope that takes the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the ladies that work in strip clubs. I don't ever say anything more graphic than the words "strip club" but if you don't want to explain what that means to your kids, you might want to skip 13:25-19:50.
Whoa, what an episode! We talk about Peter's revelation to take the Gospel to the Gentiles, what that means for us, how to receive revelation for ourselves, and how to honor the revelation that the Lord has already given us. Also I talk about how I got my name (spoiler alert, I'm named after the song Alexis by the James Gang) and if you listen to the whole episode, you can hear that song at the end of the show!
Be on the lookout for Bonus Content coming later this week about Peter's prison break and Herod and the worms!!!

This has nothing to do with any of the lesson topics in CFM (except the parables I guess). I had an experience the other night as I was feeding my cat Bella and I started thinking about prayers and God's timing.

Y'all. I know this is the LONGEST EPISODE EVER. I'm sorry! But I think it's got some REALLY good stuff in it. So maybe it's worth it? Maybe? In Episode 18 (May 6-12), I mention that there was quite a bit that got snipped out of the first take. This is a big chunk of that. It covers the first and second sections of Come Follow Me for May 6-12. I'm not in love with it, and the footage is a little raw...I stumble over some words and there might be more "ums" or silences than normal because I haven't edited it. I'm just uploading it for those of you who might find it useful in preparing your lessons!
