For our final episode of the year, we look at a yuletide classic from a philosophical and existential angle, gently challenging the fairytale ‘happy ending’ and looking at other inconsistencies within what is close to being a perfect Hollywood tale of darkness rescued by light and hope. George Bailey and the other characters are archetypes that stay just the right side of being clichés, but there may well be more going on than meets the eye…

Following this, Antony makes some other observations about life and asks a few questions (don’t expect the answers!) about our human relationship to the world around us, with further connections made to the ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ film

We complete our journey into Axel Rudakubana’s darkness with a look at some of the wealth of information uncovered by the recently-completed first phase of The Southport Inquiry, which has taken place at Liverpool Town Hall.

Special attention is given to the testimonies of Gary Poland, the unfortunate taxi driver who delivered Axel to the place of his atrocity, Axel’s brother Dion and their parents Alphonse and Laetitia.

The timeline is as imperfect as the system that sought to deal with a severe case of a ‘problem child’, as we jump around key events and try to make sense of a 5-year period in the Rudakubana family’s lives that saw an apparently well-adjusted 12 year old with a passion for acting and Doctor Who transform into a monster (as his father admits he now is).

The episode ends with some final thoughts from the Inquiry chairman as we try to build a brighter future

We conclude our latest follow-up episodes on Axel Rudakubana and his darkest of deeds on a summer’s day in Southport last July. In this part Antony looks at apparent ‘events’ involving Rudakubana - and the media coverage of them in a world awash with rumours and agendas - since his sentencing hearing in January and the award of a 52-year minimum term life sentence.

Parallel to this is the extraordinary suffering and bravery of the victims’ families and a remarkably poignant day at the London Marathon in April.  From there we move on to the ongoing government-commissioned Southport Inquiry, which seeks to clarify the precise events of July 29th and to try to shed light on how an apparently normal if withdrawn 12-year-old child could have been led to his monstrous actions

Following on from episode 57, we delve further into the dark world of Axel Rudakubana and the horrific attack(s) he perpetrated in sunny Southport last July. This time, Antony provides more details of the sometimes bizarre events surrounding the attack (without dwelling on the gory details), and also the media framing of the killer and the handling of this shocking ongoing ‘story’.

On this latter point, we are aided by a few paragraphs from Alain De Botton’s ‘The News: A User’s Manual’, which looks at the strange and compulsive relationship most of us have with the telling to us of the apparently most important events in a vast and complex world.

The Southport Inquiry is currently taking place in Liverpool, and part 2 will reveal more details and context from the wealth of information that the inquiry is providing on a daily basis.

As with the previous episode, there is also brief mention of the Lucy Letby case and John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman.

Completing our foray into advertising, mostly using Antony’s talk on Julian Charles’s excellent podcast ‘The Mind Renewed’ back in 2015, we dive deeper into Edward Bernays’s work and then segue into the darker underbelly of the craft, including the engineering of a military coup and the truly egregious and unethical snaring of innocent hearts and minds involved in advertising to children. Following on from the propaganda multi-parter at the end of last year, this time we dive into a topic with quite a lot of overlap, namely advertising. The bulk of the content comes from a talk that Antony did on Julian Charles’s excellent podcast ‘The Mind Renewed’ back in 2015.

Despite the time that has passed since the talk, most of the general thrust of advertising has been in place for a long time so we are confident that the information is still relevant and hopefully useful.

In Part 1 we talk about what advertising is and some of the techniques employed by advertisers to sell products. Towards the end of this part, we begin to discuss the work of Edward Bernays, ‘the most influential man you’ve never heard of’ (more on him later).

Part 3 of this series looks at ‘positive propaganda’ in the field of public health, multiple examples of negative propaganda by way of the demonising (sometimes literally) of political rivals and rival nations, and finally a look at how technology has brought propaganda, along with the world, into a very new landscape in the 21st century.

And so we finally reach the end of this podcast odyssey with the longest episode of the 4-part series...

The main topics here are fame (linking neatly to LALO episode 40) and the interestingly similar trajectory it shares with money in terms of how its escalation affects -or doesn't affect- a person's happiness, and then the granddaddy of all topics- death. There’s also some talk about mindfulness meditation here, offering another callback to a previous LALO episode.

Once again Derren Brown turns to some ancient wisdom to illustrate his points in the book, but there are also some fascinating modern takes on fame, death and a few other things. As always your humble host weighs in with his thoughts too, as well as offering a slightly unusual greeting of the season.

It's hard to summarise the many possible takeaways from a 6-hour  analysis of a 500-page book, but with my life coach’s hat on I can only strongly suggest a focus on excellence and full attention to tasks, including the tricky one of living itself.

We also need to understand that we are telling ourselves stories all the time, often about events that we have little or no control over and with little evidence to back up our conclusions. Life is hard but can actually be far simpler than we make it if we can limit these stories and try to relax and live with grace and compassion, both for ourselves and for others.

These include our construction of narratives with little evidence, catastrophising and ‘mind-reading’ (ours, not Derren’s!).

We also look at those old enemies anger, fear & guilt, with a little help from our friends the Stoics, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and others. There’s a lot more along the way and I humble believe you will get a lot out of this if you listen with attention and an open mind and try to digest the occasionally complex but always accessible ideas in the book and the episode.

Inspired by the recent U.S. Open tennis tournament, here’s my take on the grand slam singles finals won by Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic, the G.O.A.T. debate and the sport and its culture in general. David Blaine is known around the world and a magician and illusionist. However, he has also had a parallel life doing endurance stunts, apparently for real without illusion (though some believe otherwise).

This episode deals with my personal favourite of these stunts, when he tested the limits of human endurance, both physical and psychological, living in a plexiglass box for 44 days in London in 2003 with only water to sustain him.

One of the ironic things about this stunt is that he was both alone in isolation but was also surrounded by a daily throng of visitors who kept him going as he grew weaker, and kept him entertained as he watched the world go by…

Yes Minister, which later became Yes Prime Minister, was a BBC sitcom that ran from the late 1970s to the late 80s. On one level it was an extremely well-scripted and funny comedy, but it also offered a very profound and only slightly exaggerated look at the very interesting but also rather dark and slightly insane way in which we and our lives are governed by those at the top of the power game.

Indeed, it seems to get more and more relevant as time goes on, and this podcast explores the various levels of the show and the way in which its message seems to have been somewhat lost in the comedy aspect of it.

This is mostly a solo effort from Antony but there is a coda included which includes 'spiritual brother' of this podcast Julian Charles of 'The Mind Renewed'
